While geisha (traditional artist) was originally male, the number of male geisha has been outnumbered by female geisha since the 17th century. Today, there are only 9 male geisha in Japan, continuing the Japanese traditional culture as entertainers to perform in tea houses and special events. Mr. Housen Tatsuji is a 23-year old young male geisha who is passionate about Japanese tradition, spending a few years learning to become a professional geisha. This handsome young gentle is now based in Gifu city and works in a tea house if you would like to meet him in person. Below is a dance demonstration so please excuse the background and music.

Miso sauce is very common in Japan. Deep-fried meat is also very common. When they meet, that’s an accident. The story goes like this: A drunken man was having snacks and drinks in a food stall in the 20s. He was so drunk that he dipped the deep-fried meat in the miso hot pot to cook and eat. An exclamation of “Very tasty!” enticed another drunken man to follow suit and said “Indeed!”.  The drunken man was the first generation of owner of the most famous Miso deep-fried pork restaurant, Misokatsu Yabaton. Other famous food in Nagoya are grilled chicken wings, barbecued eel on rice, the flat noodle in soup, and rice balls with tempura. And there are many restaurants offering similar food but most of them specialize in one type of food. Smart. So you will see many pork…

Decorated with millions of LED lights, Nabana no Sato holds one of the largest illumination events in Japan from late October to early May every year. It is spectacular and well worth a short trip from Nagoya. Nabana no Sato is part of the Nagashima Resort which is about 35 to 40 minutes away by public transportation from Nagoya. The park has a 9,000 square meter botanic garden, a hot spring, foot bath, and restaurants. In the winter, the garden come to live at night with amazing illumination. Direction from Nagoya: take a bus from Kintetsu Bus Terminal which is located next to the Nagoya JR station. This is the most direct route which takes you to Nabana no Sato without having to switch buses or train. It takes around 40 minutes.
