Whether or not you are a k-pop star fan, you should never miss Gangnam when you visit Seoul. Gangnam has been the most trendy and stylish place where the flagship shops of all the international brands and the entertainment agencies are. If you come to the area often enough, there is a good chance that you will see some singers and movie stars in some bars, cafes and restaurants. Now, there is a good alternative which is as entertaining and exciting when you come to the area. The GangnamDol, a created word of “Gangnam” and “idol”. There is a collection of popular k-pop stars on the 1 km long branded K Star Road where you are free to take photos and hugs your idols (the GangnamDols).

The dome shape glass ceiling Starbucks on top of a subway station in Gangnam is probably the best I have seen not only in Korea, but also in Asia. Celebrating the 15th anniversary of Starbucks and the 800th store opened in Korea, this is a signature store featuring beautiful interior decoration and Starbucks Reserve in Gangnam area (south of the river). Locating in the newly renovated transport interchange called Famille Station in Gangnam, this 800th Starbucks is one of the few premium stores in Seoul that sells upscale Starbucks Reserve. You may find the single origin line as well as some special edition of Starbuck merchandise here. However, it is very crowded. People are sharing tables and there is always a long line at the counter. If you don’t fancy making a trip just to take a look at this signature Starbucks, well, the Famille Station is a trendy gourmet mall in Gangnam. The mall was renovated in 2014 according to the look of a classic London train station, featuring red brick walls, pillars, arched ceiling design, and a London clock. Level 1 features around 30 food and beverage stores, from…

Ilsan Lake Park is one of the largest man-made lake park in Asia, spanning across over 990,000 square meters with a musical fountain, 4.7 km bike path, foot path, 100 species of wild flowers, and a forest with 200,000 trees. The park is very big. Be prepared for a good couple of hours walk if you take a loop. It is a very nice walk though. The foot path is easy and flat. You can take a rest any time and enjoy the green and nature. It’s along the subway line which is very accessible – Jeongbalsan Station (Seoul Subway Line 3), Exit 2. There is a shopping/mall area before you get to the entrance of the lake. So you may take a meal before or after the walk.

The Ihwa Mural Village has become a very popular photo spot for both tourists and locals. The last time I visited I saw a film production. What makes this area attractive is the murals, metal sculptures and mosaic in this hillside residential area. Pleasant surprises in this unexpected area. There are steps and slopes. Be prepared for a little hike. The are is located up the slopes of Naksan Park at Hyehwa Station in Seoul (subway line 4). Get off at exit 2, turn left of the Arco Arts Centre and go up the hill.  There is a sign to Naksan Park that you may follow too. There are two ways to go up. Now the Korea Tourism Office offers a map. It’s easy. This mural village was relaunched in 2013. The first launch was a few years but but it was such a disturbance to the residents that the murals were removed. The noise and nuisance caused by the growing number of visitors may affect this neighborhood. So be considerate next time you visit. University area is always filled with…

Namiseon Island is a really nice weekend outing from Seoul, particularly after a TV drama was filmed a few years ago. It’s green everywhere and certainly very colorful when the trees turn red in autumn. You can ride a bike around the island and even stay there (yes, hotel rooms available but always full). It’s a beautiful place with nice breeze from the water. The most famous areas are the tall tree-lined path (metasequoia) and the riverside gingko tree lane. There are restaurants, woodcraft art works and children/family activities areas. It is also a popular place for pre-wedding photos too!
