The LED Rose Garden at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul was a major attraction since last autumn. The 25,550 LED roses were set up as one of the exhibition to celebrate the first anniversary of DDP, encouraging continued support by the local communities to this new landmark of design and creativity. The 25,550 roses are also symbolic to the 70th anniversary of the South Korea Independence Day (70 years  x 365 days = 25,550). Meaningful, thoughtful and beautiful!  Beauty is one of the key elements in art and design. The white roses are well made and the glow at night using LED lights have created a vast starlight field of roses. Each rose is planted independently on a real grass field. You don’t see any messy electric wires on the ground. The rose garden is set up on a slope, enabling visitors to get good view in every angle. Well thought out and excellent execution! All roses are lit up from 6pm to 10pm every day, attracting many couples, families as well as tourists to take a walk and capture the…

Naejangsan is one of the most popular places for outing and hiking during autumn in Korea. I think that the easy 2.3 km long flat walking path filled with maple trees is the main reason. It is a really nice walk in the shades of maple trees and there is a small stream on the side. At the end of the 2.3 km road/path is the beginning of some new routes: cable car up to the view point on top at an additional cost (not included in your entrance ticket), walk further to the Naejang Temple, and there are several hiking trails you can go further up the mountain. Depending on your time, most tourists won’t go on further hike because many of them come to Naejangsan from Seoul on a day trip. It takes about 3 hours one way. And the sun goes down after 5pm. The first time I visited a few years ago was the best. It was less crowded. You could sit and take pictures everywhere and walk to the wooden pavilion in the Naejan Temple. Now, the road…

The Garden of Morning Calm is a really beautiful garden with nice landscape and a wide variety of trees and flowers. It is the oldest private garden in Korea. The Garden of Morning Calm is conceptualized by a university professor who had a vision to create a world-famous garden and the inspiration of the name is based on a great Indian poet describing Korea as “the land of the morning calm” during Joseon Dynasty. It is located in the middle of the mountain about 1.5 hours north east of Seoul (Gapyeong County of Gyeong Gi-Do), and not too far away from the popular Namiseon Island. There is a tour bus that runs in a loop that stops at the Garden of Morning Calm, Le Petite France and Namiseon Island, which are the three key tourist destinations at the moment. I have been to this garden four times and still enjoy it because garden has continued to build, planting more flower beds, adding buildings, and this year a new suspension bridge. If you like flowers, trees, and enjoy outing, this is a great place to be: fresh air, colorful flowers, and beautiful…

Ilsan Lake Park is one of the largest man-made lake park in Asia, spanning across over 990,000 square meters with a musical fountain, 4.7 km bike path, foot path, 100 species of wild flowers, and a forest with 200,000 trees. The park is very big. Be prepared for a good couple of hours walk if you take a loop. It is a very nice walk though. The foot path is easy and flat. You can take a rest any time and enjoy the green and nature. It’s along the subway line which is very accessible – Jeongbalsan Station (Seoul Subway Line 3), Exit 2. There is a shopping/mall area before you get to the entrance of the lake. So you may take a meal before or after the walk.

Namiseon Island is a really nice weekend outing from Seoul, particularly after a TV drama was filmed a few years ago. It’s green everywhere and certainly very colorful when the trees turn red in autumn. You can ride a bike around the island and even stay there (yes, hotel rooms available but always full). It’s a beautiful place with nice breeze from the water. The most famous areas are the tall tree-lined path (metasequoia) and the riverside gingko tree lane. There are restaurants, woodcraft art works and children/family activities areas. It is also a popular place for pre-wedding photos too!
