If you are visiting Kumano area for the UNESCO world heritage sacred sites and pilgrimage route, don’t miss the chance to experience the Kawayu Onsen which is an outdoor bath in Oto River, a natural hot spring wonder. It is only 10 minutes by car or bus from the sacred site Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine. Otor River is a tributary of Kumano River, featuring natural crystal clear warm water. One side of the river is a forest mountain and the other side fills with hotels, traditional Ryokan inns and some family run Minshuku guest houses. Many of the accommodations offer guests room facing the river and are walkable distance to the Kawayu Onsen which is a pool dug manually for people to soak in. You may go for day trip if you are driving or stay in one of the accommodations to spend more time to enjoy this natural wonder. Wakayu Midoriya is one of the larger hotel in the area with both Japanese and western style guest rooms. The cool things about this hotel is that it has…

Getting a good nice sleep is a key to any nice holidays. There are times when you just want a clean room with comfortable bed. Other times you want a bit more luxury and stay longer in one location, particularly when you are travelling with your families and your loved ones. Toba Seaview Hotel in Mie Prefecture is a good choice. Locating by the coastline, the hotel offers a panoramic sea view of the Pacific Ocean and it is only 20 minutes away by car from the Ise Grand Shrine. There are two public hot baths, Japanese style guest rooms, western twin rooms, rooms with private onsen, and a massive suite with excellent sea view, living room that can accommodate the whole family staying in it. However, this special suite is not available for booking on website yet. You may have to send an inquiry to the hotel directly.

Searching for a hotel to stay in the winter, accessibility is a key factor in the decision process because I don’t want to drag my luggages and walk on the snow for a long time. Of course the hotel room, facilities and price are also important. Tokachigawa Hot Spring Dai-ichi Hotel was my pick for the Tokachigawa trip. It turned out to be a good choice! The bus stopped in front of the hotel. The hotel is conveniently located by Tokachi River, offering nice views from the guest rooms and many of the rest areas. The amenities and services are good. It offers free shuttle bus to Sairinka Festival at night during the event, free shuttle bus back to Obihiro JR Station, and even a bus to Lake Shikaribetsu the next morning!

Tamatsukuri in Shimane Prefecture is one of the oldest onsen areas in Japan since 733. It is a popular onsen area known as the “baths of the gods”, implying the gods like taking bath in the area. Hence many statues and images of myths and gods along the onsen street. The main feature is the beautiful Tamayu River that passes through the district from the JR station to the onsen area. It’s a lovely tranquil area where many traditional Japanese inns (ryokan) can be found. Also, there are some free foot baths, shops and cafes that offer a nice short walk.
