Bamboo products such as baskets and household goods have been traditional crafts in the past and become less desirable in modern days. It is a pleasure surprise to see the improvised products using bamboo to make collectable items and modernised goods in Fukui Japan. Echizen Bamboo Doll Village (Take-ningyo no Sato) is a unique museum, workshop and gallery/shop in one location where you may see some award-winning bamboo dolls display, observe bamboo dolls-making demonstration, and try to make one yourself.

Kutani ware is one of the traditional Japanese potteries with over 350 years of history. Kutani is the name of the village where porcelain raw mineral was discovered, now part of Kaga, Ishikawa Japan. After the discovery, the first lord of Kaga spearheaded the production of porcelain by learning from China and building kilns in the 17th century. There are several styles of Kutani ware but the main features are the vivid color: bluish-green and the “5 colours”, using green, yellow, red, purple and navy. Kuntani ware was designated a traditional craft in 1975 and now available in Kanazawa, Komatsu, Kaga and Nomi-shi.

Newly opened in March 2017, Aeon Mall Shinkomatsu is the latest and the largest shopping mall in Hokuriku region (northwestern part of the main island of Japan). There are around 160 shops, cafes and restaurants and 3,400 parking space! The shopping mall is only 15 minutes away by car from Komatsu Airport. There are shuttle buses from JR Komatsu Station but it’s only twice every hour at the moment. Taking a taxi from the JR Komatsu station costs about ¥2,100 one way.
