Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine

Nachi Taisha (Grand Shrine) is among the three most important shrines in Kumano that was listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes of the Kii Mountain Range in Japan. The other two shrines are Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine and Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine. Nachi Grand Shrine is believed to be the place where you can find and meet your destiny.

Locating half way up Nachi Mountain, Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine is about 350 meters above sea level. It is a unique place where you can find both Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in one location, take a hike on an ancient cobblestone path surrounded by hundreds of years old cedar trees, as well as to see the tallest waterfall in Japan.

Besides, you may try out some elegant outfits back in the Heian Period (794-1185) and take photos in the area. It’s a great experience!

If you drive, there are a few parking lots close to each tourist attraction. If you take JR, simply get on the regular bus that runs between JR Kii-Karuusa Station and Nachisan, get off at either the waterfall where you may hike all the way up to Nachi Grand Shrine, or get off at the last stop and go down from Nachi Grand Shrine. I started from Nachi Tashi Grand Shrine.

Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine
The beginning of the pilgrimage route from Nachisan bus stop. A long stairway!
Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine
There are two orange torri (gates). The second one is the top level where Nachi Grand Shrine is.
Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine
One of the interesting experience is to rent a traditional costume back in Heian Period. It’s an elegant dress and a big hat with two long meshes for women. There is a walking stick as a complete ancient pilgrimage outfit set but it was difficult to handle so many things and walk around.

Seigantoji
The Buddha temple Seigantoji is on the right after you visited Nachi Grand Shrine. There is a main hall, buddha statues and other buildings.
Saigokujunrei pagoda
The 3-level pagoda is part of Seigantoji. There is an entrance fee of ¥300 to go up the pagoda.
Nachi-no-Otaki
You may continue to walk down the path to Nachi-no-Otaki. This torii is the entrance to the waterfall. There are 133 stone steps to the waterfall which is 133 meters tall.
Nachi-no-Otaki
Nachi-no-Otaki is the tallest waterfall in Japan, measuring 133 meters in height. It is the source of water for the surrounding dense forest.
One of the highlights at Mount Nachi is the Daimon-zaka which is a 600 meters long cobblestone path surrounding by centuries old trees. It’s a great hiking trail where you can experience walking through the pilgrimage route in the ancient time.
Kumano Kodo
Along the Kumano Kodo stone path stands many gigantic cedar trees. Some are hundreds to over a thousand year old. This one is 800 years old cedar tree with a door. Apparently you may walk inside the tree but it’s locked.
Daimon-zaka Meoto-sugi
There are two cedar trees called Meotosugi which are 55 meters tall, 800 years old cedar trees. Because they are two together, they are called “Husband and Wife” tree. You may see the scale of the two persons walking through in the picture. This is also the end if you walk down or the beginning of the Daimon-zaka if you start from the bottom.
