This is a perfect Bhutan tour for travellers who have limited time, yet can explore all the “must see” highlights in western Bhutan, including the famous Tiger’s Nest, picturesque valleys of Paro, Thimpu and the most beautiful fortress in Punakha. The journey covers the cultural attractions, spiritual and historical highlights with breaktaking hikes, and experiencing the Bhutanese way of life.
Day 1 – Hong Kong to Bangkok
Take a morning flight to Bangkok, check in the airport hotel. Enjoy free time in the afternoon. You may go shopping, sightseeing, enjoy massage and taste the local food in Bangkok. Overnight in the airport hotel.
Day 2 – Bangkok to Paro. Visit Paro Dzong and Museum
Take an early morning flight from Bangkok to Paro. Yes, it is very early in the morning and your Bhutan trip begins as your flight descends Paro Aiport. Your guide and driver will greet you at the airport and take you to the Paro town for a coffee break.
In the afternoon, visit the National Museum and Paro Dzong which is a magnificent fortress built in the 17th century. It is the finest example of Bhutanese architecture with a complex of courtyards, temples and government offices. It serves as the religious, military, administrative, and social centers of Paro district. The National Museum is the small round white building on top of the hill overlooking the Paro Dzong and the valley. It was a watch tower in the old days and now converted into a museum, exhibiting some artifacts, antique statues, Thangkhas (the Buddhist scroll painting) and masks used for festivals.
Altitude of Paro: 2280m. Overnight in Thimphu (Phuentshopelri Hotel or similar).
Day 3 – Sightseeing in Thimphu
Thimphu is the capital city of Bhutan and home to the Royal family and approximately 100,000 residents.
It is one of the few places in Bhutan where you can access ATM machines and exchange money. There are a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants in the city. You will visit:
- The national memorial stupa (pagoda)
- School of arts and crafts
- Postal Museum to make our own stamps
- The giant 62m tall Buddha Dordema
- The Takin preserved zoo where you can see the national animal of Bhutan
- The Trashichho Dzong
Altitude of Thimphu: 2250m. Overnight in Thimphu (Phuentshopelri Hotel or similar).
Day 4 – Dochula Pass & Punakha
Morning drive to Punakha over Dochula pass(3,150m) which is a scenic spot offering a breath-taking view of the Himalayas mountain range and the beautiful 108 stupas (pagodas).
Visit the historic Punakha Dzong (fortress) which is the most beautiful fortress in the country.
In the afternoon, visit the royal nunnery founded by the queen mother, and learn about their daily lifestyle.
Altitude of Punakha: 1300m. Overnight in Punakha (Hotel Vara or similar).
Day 5 – Punakha to Paro
Hoist a prayer flag on the on the suspension bridge over Mo Chhu (river) . Then take a 45-minute hike through rice paddy fields to the beautiful Khamsum Yueley Namgyal stupa (pagoda) that overlooks the Punakha valley. On the top floor of the pagoda, you can see the old wish fulfilling Buddha Statue, and the exotic Buddhists painting inside the entire pagoda is the fine workmanship of the Bhutanese artists of only its kind seen in the country.
After the hike, drive back to Paro with a lunch stopover at Dochula scenic spot, then en-route visit to Semtokha dzong, the oldest fortress built in Bhutan. Upon reaching Paro, visit Kyichu Lhakhang temple, the oldest temple in the country.
Overnight in Paro (Janka Resort or similar).
Day 6 – Hike to Taktshang (Tiger Nest)
Morning hike to iconic Tiger Nest monastery that clings on the edge of a steep cliff 900 meters above Paro valley. It takes about 2.5 hours up and 2 hours back. You may choose to ride on a horseback to go halfway up the hill. You will have to hike the rest of the trail to see this magnificent monastery.
Visit a farm house, try your hands on archery or relax in a hot-stone bath, and enjoy local rice wine and yak butter tea.
Overnight in Paro (Janka Resort or similar).
