Enjoy the tranquility, fresh oysters and nice walk
Matsushima Island was not on my list of cherry blossom destinations because I couldn’t stay in Sendai city for long enough. I was staying in Yamagata but it rained. I decided to take a day trip to Matsushima where I might see some sun. Matsushima is one of the top tree most scenic spots (Nihon Senkei) in Japan. The other two places are Miyagi in Hiroshima and Amanohashidate in Kyoto.
It was a last minute change of plan and I didn’t pay much attention to the best spots for viewing cherry blossom. I am sure that there are enough things to do and experience.
Going to this type of famous travel destination does not need much planning. Everyone goes to the same direction. After I got out of the train station, everyone walked towards the waterfront, they head for the cruise. I didn’t follow.
My first stop was Zuigan-ji Temple which is a not-to-be-missed tourist attraction. There were a few cherry trees in the area. Not many but nice. My second stop was an oyster lunch near the Fish Market. It was a good choice! Delicious!
The third stop was Fukuura Island. I paid ¥200 fee to walk across the 252-meter vibrant red bridge to take a walk on the small island. I had no expectation other than a nice walk. Surprisingly, there was a piece of large lawn with cherry trees along the walking path. Very few people walked here and I spent all the time I needed to take photos without any pressure.
It was easy to navigate around the islands with clear walking paths and directional signs. There are a number of view points looking out to other small islands. After I finished, I walked back to the station and passed through many souvenir shops. My last stop was to grill my own squid cake. Something fun to do to conclude my day trip.
Access: From Sendai Station, take Senseki Line and get off at Matsushimakaigan Station. It takes about 40 minutes.
Save for the next trip: For the best view of Matsushima Islands, you have to go up to the higher ground. There is a Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park(西行戻しの松公園)where there are cherry trees. Well, next time.
