Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park)

Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park)

Cherry blossom at Japan’s 100 best historical park

After Kitakami, I moved up north to Morioka, the capital city of Iwate Prefecture. The short Shinkansen train ride was only 20 minutes.

Locating in the middle of Iwate Prefecture, Morioka has been one of the busy trading hubs since the early history of Japan and remains a key city in Northeast Japan (Tohoku Region). From here, I’m going to a couple of cherry blossom viewing places.

My first destination was Morioka Castle Ruin Park (Iwate Park) right in the city.

The castle was demolished during Meiji Restoration when the Japanese feudal system ended. It is up on a small hill so you may still take in the spectacular view of the city from the top of the park.

Morioka Castle Ruins Park is recognized as a national historic site and one of Japan’s 100 best historical parks. It is a popular spot for cherry blossom and autumn foliage. There are hundreds of cherry trees and lawn area for residents to picnic and relax.

Access: 15 minutes walk  or 10 minutes by bus (Loop bus) from Morioka Station.
