Sitting atop a hill overlooking south of Thimphu in Bhutan, this 52 meters tall Buddha statue is one of the largest in the world. The statue is made of bronze and gilded in gold. 125,000 small buddha statues also gilded in gold were placed inside the big Buddha. It is spectacular and very shiny!

The construction of Buddha Dordenma began in 2006 and concluded in September 2015. The construction of the main entrance is still ongoing as you can see in this photo.

You may drive all the way up to the Buddha instead of hiking from the bottom.

I felt so lucky to be there on 5th November 2016, attending the first world peace prayer event held by the chief monk even though I am not a buddhist.

It was crowded with lots of locals as well as some tourists. The statue was cordoned off. Hundreds of monks sat in the canopies facing the big Buddha to pray.
