Looking for Japanese food around Wakayama JR Station, a big billboard writing “Baby Sea Bream” on a building caught my eyes. Then I found this restaurant right at the station and gave it a try.
Established in 1901, Matoi Sushi is a hundred-year-old business and now located near Wakayama JR Station. I think it’s popular among the locals, there is a short queue outside the restaurant with just local people. 纏壽司-和歌山水了軒創業於明治34年(1901年),這百年壽司店現在位於和歌山站附近。我猜這壽司專門店是當地受歡迎的餐廳,中午時間餐廳外面有一條小隊輪候,全部是日本人。
I waited for about half an hour to get a table. The restaurant is very local and there are empty seats and tables but there is only one lady and a couple of chefs servicing the whole restaurant. That’s why it took so long to be seated. 等了約半小時入座,其實餐廳是有空位的,但我看到只有一位上了年紀的女士和兩位師傅負責全餐廳的餐飲,所以一切服務需時。
Coming here for the baby red breams, I order the restaurant special: Baby Redbream set. ¥1,850. There is a limited quantity every day. 我來是為了吃小鯛的,當然要吃這份「小鯛雀壽司」套餐,數量限定,每份¥1,850。
Red seabream (or Pagous major) has been praised for its flavor and for its traditional use as an auspicious food in Japan. Baby red breams a famously prepared with salt and vinegar. So they are not raw and quite chewy. 鯛魚在日本一直以來都是比較矜貴的魚,而小鯛最著名的煮法是用鹽和醋醃製,所以不算是魚生,壽司有味道和口感。
There are always some assorted side dish in Japanese cuisine, using some seasonal food. In spring, sakura theme is a must. 日本料理都有其他前菜,通常會採用時令食材,而春天一定有些櫻花點綴。
There are also other generic set meal choices. This is a sashimi rice bowl with tempura udon set. Costs ¥1,500. 餐廳有很多其他選擇,這是魚生飯加天婦羅烏冬套餐。每份 ¥1,500。
This is a pretty good restaurant. The sashimi rice bowl is covered with assorted fresh seafood. Looks good, too. 纏壽司是不錯的餐廳,魚生飯鋪滿新鮮魚生,看起來已經覺得好吃。
