Autumn in Japan

Autumn in Okayama Korakuen

Completed in 1700, Okayama Korakuen was designed to be an entertainment garden for important guests during the Edo Period. It is one of the few historic gardens that has minimal modification and was designated as a Special Scenic Location in Japan in 1952.

Conveniently located in Okayama city near the castle, Okayama Korakuen is one of the three more beautiful gardens in Japan, offering amazing scenic view in different seasons. It is one of the best places to visit for autumn foliage in middle to late November.

There is an outstanding ginkgo tree on the front lawn before you arrive at the ticket office and main gate. There aren’t that many ginkgo trees in the garden but don’t spent too much time on one tree. There are more maple trees inside.

The best view point of Okayama Korakuen Garden is from the 6m man-made Yishinzan Hill. Though the lawn is dried, the panoramic view of the garden is still amazing.

Sawa-no-ike Pond is the largest pond in the middle of the garden with 3 beautiful little islands, making it pleasant to stroll around to observe the koi fish, pine trees and the beautiful landscape.

While there are maple trees scattered around in the garden, Chishio-no-mori Garden is where you can see nearly 100 maple trees in one area. That’s the spot for the color!

The area is barricaded so the good thing is that you can take photos with a perfect red backdrop without capturing other people.
